6. Mount Assiniboine Park

Mount Assiniboine Provincial Park offers visitors shimmering lakes, glistening glaciers, towering mountain peaks and alpine meadows. The park is a wilderness area where there are no supplies or equipment available. This untouched part of the Canadian Rockies does not have any roads and trails provide the only land access. Mount Assiniboine Park is located along the continental divide near the south east corner of British Columbia. The park covers over 39,000 hectares and is part of the Canadian Rocky Mountain UNESCO World Heritage Site.

It’s a short 2.9 kilometers, with steep terrain covering an overall elevation gain of 2,800 feet. Most hikers use the trail as a natural version of a stair master, where regulars know exactly how long it takes them to get to the top. Since the trail is used so much, maintenance workers have had to build wooden stairs on much of the path in order to prevent further erosion from overuse.

3. Blackwater Canyon

Blackwater Canyon trail is a scenic and dangerous hike, wrapping around the canyon with gorgeous views. It’s a well marked 3 km rounnd trip hike along the Blackwater Canyon. You can expect to hike through pines and flowers to the canyon rim and there are plenty of viewpoints and picnic sites. Backcountry hiking heads to the Fraser River. The jagged, dark edges of Black Tusk is one of the most scenic and one-of-a-kind hikes in southwestern British Columbia. Located in Garibaldi Black Tusk is the most spectacular mountain in the area and is located in Garibaldi Provincial Park.

Although it is possible to finish this hike in one day, the elevation gain and distance make for an extremely long day. Because of this, some prefer to hike Taylor Meadows or Garibaldi Lake and camp overnight, and then hike to Black Tusk the next day. If you do decide to hike the Tusk in one day, be sure to allow for time to return to the parking lot while it is still daylight.

1. West Coast Trail

It is a 77 kilometre hike along the west coast of Vancouver Island and lies within the southern boundaries of the Pacific Rim National Park. The 7 to 10-day adventure trek attracts hikers world-wide. The trail is open for trekkers from May 1 to September 30 and is not recommended to travel during other times, as it is very hazardous. If one isn’t up for a week-long trek, ther are several legs of the trail that are fantastic hikes.

Top 5 Tractor Brands

October 30th, 2011

There are several tractor brands around the world, but there are a few brands that stand out because of their performance. New or used you can count on their durability to last. Here the top 5 tractor brands are given an overview.

John Deere Tractors

In 2008 Deere and Company (known as John Deere) is listed as the leading manufacturer of agricultural machinery in the world. The longest production span of the two-cylinder John Deere tractors was the Model D. The Model D was the longest produced tractor from the years 1923- 1953.

In the 1960’s the new generation came along when John Deere switched to four and six-cylinder tractors. That model was called the 8010 and only one-hundred tractors of this brand was made. A few years later the 8020 was developed and became the standard all other farm tractors are measured by. “Nothing runs like a Deere.”

Massey Ferguson Tractors

Another brand name in tractors is Massey Ferguson. The brand Massey Ferguson is used by AGCO (Allis- Gleaner Corporation) and remains a major seller around the globe. In the 1930’s Massey Harris produced the world’s first four-wheel drive tractors.

The first massive production of tractors for the company was the Massey Harris Ferguson TVO. In 1958 the MF135 was widely popular because of its power and reliability compared to other tractors of its time. The present models that are sought after today are the 5400, 6400, 7400, and the 8400. Currently there are more Massey tractors in the world than any other brand of tractors.

New Holland Tractors

In the 1900’s the first New Holland “freeze proof” tractor engine was produced. After that there were five different horsepower models mass produced by the New Holland Company. It all started with the small 1-1/2 HP engine which ranged up to 16 HP. The most popular tractor model offered by the New Holland Company was the 5 HP tractor in 1911. Later Ford bought New Holland and this brand was offered by Ford.

Case IH Tractors

Case IH (J.I. Case and International Harvester) tractors are one of the worlds largest name brands of agriculture equipment. The Farmall tractor was produced in 1926 and by 1930 they sold 100,000 tractors. Model 10-20 and 15-30 were the first important tractors in the 1915’s. A few more popular models of this brand of tractors are the Steiger 535 QT, Magnum 335, and the Case IH 3594 (the Magnum 335 being the most popular brand).

Ford Tractors

The first lightweight tractor that was built was a Ford brand name. The Fordson Model F was finished in 1916 and because it was mass produced and lightweight it made it affordable for the average farmer to own one. This tractor had 20 HP with a four-cylinder vaporising oil engine. From 1917-1928 the Model F sold three quarters of a million units, which is more than any tractor sold then and now.

In 1941 the first three-point hitch system was introduced. It was known as the 9 N Ford tractor and the design is still used on several tractors today. A few modern tractor models are the Ford 5000, Ford 2000 Diesel and the most modern Ford tractor model known as Fiat Agri.

Enjoy the Challenge of Gourmet Cooking

October 27th, 2011

Gourmet Cooking

Gourmet cooking presents a challenge basic cooking does not. Food preparation may require use of various cooking implements foreign to basic cooking. All though this may be the case in retrospect it’s just a different approach and this ought not intimidate you in the least.

The types of foods used in gourmet dishes are not native to basic cooking. Truffles, imported cheeses and spices like lemon grass or saffron and flavorings like rosewater may be a key ingredient.

Gourmet Entree Challenges

Meats, fish and poultry in gourmet recipes, for example, crown roast, partridge baked in rock salt shells, a Beef Wellington baked with a light flaky crust or duck prepared with plum wine sauce are unforgettable gourmet repasts. Gourmet recipes are always made from freshest ingredients and always from “scratch”.

There may be several phases to cooking specific gourmet recipes. They may begin with paring and chopping in one phase, graduate to light braising next and finish with a final baking phase.

The Gourmet Cook

A gourmet cook never lacks innovation when designing a new dish. This is a critical aspect of the character of a gourmet chef. They are both innovative and creative and this in fact is where you can really shine and have some fun.

Each new gourmet recipe is a study in the art of fine cooking. Artful presentation of the meal is important. Gourmet preparation results in extraordinary tastes and colorful design.

All of the above combined makes for an enjoyable cooking experience.

Cheap Auto Repair

October 26th, 2011

Auto repair is a headache for motorists all over the world. Repair and replacement of parts have become so costly that motorists are looking for cheap auto repair as an alternative to regular repair.

Many auto repair firms advertise to repair vehicles at cheap rates but they do this by using inferior parts and employing unskilled workers. Generally, specialized shops, including transmission repair and old car repair shops, offer cheaper auto repairs compared to general shops. There are even general repair shops that provide you quality repair at cheaper rates.

It is imperative that you discuss the exact nature of the repair job and take time with the mechanic before you actually launch the repair. Most of the modern vehicles have computerized monitoring systems, which help mechanics identify problems easily. Auto repair manuals and guides call tell you details of each repair job and the normal time taken for each. These manuals can be bought from auto parts shops in your neighborhood.

Online you can find many experienced mechanics advertising cheap auto repair. They do brake jobs for as little as $50.00 and many other repair jobs just as cheap. There are also part-time mechanics who do most of their work at their own house and are ready to do cheap auto repair on request.

Cheap auto repair is usually sought by people who are money-minded. Cheap repair has many drawbacks too. It is not reliable, and often functionality is not guaranteed. Mechanics doing cheap auto repair generally do not give proper attention and, in many cases, inferior parts are used. Cheap auto repair can lead to long-term problems that may sometimes cost you much more money in the long run.

Finding the Best Childcare Resources

October 25th, 2011

Childcare resources can be hard to find. As a parent, the health and well-being of your children is always your top priority. However, with an ongoing and often prohibitive expense like childcare, money is also an issue in almost all instances. There may be dozens of childcare services that are being promoted within your immediate area, but that doesn’t mean that any specific one is right for you. In order to determine what will best meet the needs of you and your children, you will need to further explore the various options, finding the best fit for your schedule and lifestyle. There are several possibilities.

Childcare Center

A childcare center is the most readily available option in most areas. Daycare centers are also often more affordable. You can expect to see a higher ratio of children to adults, though all the legal mandates of your state will need to be maintained. Before you explore childcare resources, know what those laws are. If you visit a daycare center that does not comply with these regulations, walk away. The safety of your children is not worth the risk. In addition, keep in mind that being exposed to more children can increase the potential for the spread of infectious diseases.

The best daycare centers are very aware and keep hygiene concerns at the top of their minds.

Licensed In-home Care

This option is a middle ground between the institutionalized daycare center and private care. In-home daycare providers are usually required to carry a license from the state in which they operate. Again, getting familiar with these guidelines will be a large part of gathering your childcare resources. Home daycare workers must maintain a smaller ratio of children to adult care providers. These are usually run out of a private home, so the atmosphere is more relaxed and less like an institution. Take the time to carefully interview the provider.

Many in-home daycare caregivers truly love children and desire to offer nurturing and love. However, there are some that are mainly in the work for the money. Obviously, you will probably favor someone with a warm demeanor, who is at ease with your children.

Private Daycare Provider

There is more variation in this category than in any other. Childcare services can be provided by anybody, in any setting. Many parents, for example, find a grandparent or aunt that is available to provide care to their children. Others may find a referral through a mutual friend or via church. Keep in mind that caution should be maintained when using a private care provider.

There is not licensing or training requirements that are necessary for most of these arrangements. Don’t be afraid to extensively interview and ask for references. If you are working with family for your childcare resources, it can save both parties a lot of trouble to have a written payment agreement in place. The fastest way to alienate a family member from caring for your children is to neglect to pay as agreed upon. Luckily, most private providers charge extremely reasonable rates.Depending on where you live and what your local community has to offer, there may be other options. However, these are the three most common types of childcare resources that most parents will be choosing from. Each has their pros and cons and vary in price. Getting familiar with these options will help you select the best childcare services.

A History of Sports Cars

October 23rd, 2011

What defines the term sports car and why are we so fascinated with them. Is it simply the flowing curves of the body design, the massive power output of the high revving engines or could it even be the distinctive throaty musical note of the exhaust pipes. Everyone will have a different opinion on what they think makes sports cars special and for the reasons why we love them so much. Even people who say they are impractical or unnecessary cannot help but to turn and look when one drives past displaying its beautiful contours hinting at the power hidden under the perfectly painted panels.

Since the development of motorised vehicles a small select group of individuals have always had the undying fascination of designing and building them bigger, more powerful and faster than they either needed to be or really should be with any regard to safety. This was no different with the motor car industry, from its relative simple and sluggish beginnings the car quickly developed into a very useful mode of transport and working tool. For some this new way to transport us around turned into an obsession of power and speed and welcomed the age of the racing cars and sports cars.

To begin with motor vehicles were built for more functional than aesthetically pleasing reasons and their ability to carry both people and heavy loads is what drove the designers and manufacturers forward. Humans though have an eye for beauty and a thirst for power and speed, combining these attributes the birth of the sports cars was inevitable.

As new developments occurred in the early motor industry a small number of designers, builders and drivers pushed the motor car to its limits on race tracks to test its abilities against other manufacturers vehicles. These races fuelled the next generation of cars and drivers. As engines became more powerful the ability to race these machines began to push the designs and needs to new levels this quite often was at the expense of someone’s life.

Big powerful engines were placed into fragile frames and pushed to the limit often with dire consequences to drivers and spectators. But humans have a need to go faster and faster and this drove these brave and quite often reckless early pioneers to design better and more powerful machines and this began the start of the new age of the modern motor car. Safety was usually an after thought if it came up at all, the main focus was pushing the machines and drivers to their limits and beyond if possible. The engines power output quickly out grew the motor cars ability to handle these increases and the designers had to rethink the chassis and suspensions limitations. As with in the aircraft industry the designs of planes and engines regularly changed along with the abilities and reliability of the aircraft, the motor cars began to evolve along the same lines with new ideas and breakthroughs in technologies incorporating aerodynamics to help reduce drag and stronger building materials for chassis and bodywork.

Developing test vehicles purely for racing was the beginning of what we now class as the sports car. After the Second World War a new breed of sports car began to emerge. The once very high-priced and hard to obtain race bred cars that only the most wealthy and enthusiastic owners could secure began to evolve into a more accessible vehicle with the additional comforts and road functionalities, and what was even more important, a more affordable price tag making them more accessible to the average owner and driver. The sports cars had taken their first steps from the exclusive domain to main stream availability. Over the next few years as advancements were made on and off the racing circuit designs began their slow transformation into the popular modern shapes of today’s models. Many famous names have added their own distinctions to the sports car moulds and most can be easily identified by pure shape alone even today.

Tips For Cooking With Real Firewood

October 20th, 2011

I love to cook over real fire! Whether on a gas grill, charcoal grill, smoker grill, fire pit or even in my fireplace, cooking with fire is fun and creates unique and delicious aromas and flavors that enhance many foods greatly. But by far my very favorite way to cook is over a real hardwood firewood fire. While good charcoal and smoker cooking can certainly give you some nice char-broiled wood flavors, there is nothing quite like a real wood fire. There is something very primitive and romantic about it, harking back to pre-modern times when food was all cooked over an open wood fire.

Most people do not take advantage of real wood to cook anymore because technology has made things easier for us. Between gas stoves and grills and easy to light charcoal, cooking with fire is quick, easy and pretty much hassle free nowadays. However, there is something to be said for a leisurely afternoon, building a real fire and then using that fire to perfectly cook your grilled meal. Sometimes I don’t want “quick”, “easy” or the bare minimum.

So for all those like-minded grillers out there, those who want to get a little more primitive and a lot more delicious, here are some tips for how to cook with real firewood on your grill, fire pit or even in your fireplace. It takes some time and it take some practice to get right, but I think you will love the results!

Choose Good Hardwoods

At the heart of great wood cooking is good firewood which burns long, hot and gives off savory aromas. Don’t skimp in this department! All of the smoky, grilled flavor that you get in your food comes from your wood so if you use bad wood, your results will be bad. So what is bad? First of all, avoid softwoods in general.

Softwoods burn easily and hot but don’t burn as long and don’t tend to develop long-lasting hot embers at their core. Softwoods, like pine for example, also tend to be fairly resinous and many give off piney or other sharp smells which, while not unpleasant, do not pair well with food. You can use softwoods to help get your fire started, but what you really want for the majority of your firewood is good, seasoned hardwoods.

Hardwoods are denser and will burn longer and hotter. They take longer to get started, but the extra work is worth it. There are dozens of hardwoods that make great fuel for cooking, some of which have very distinct and delicious aromas and flavors. Oak is very common, which gives off a rich, smokey aroma. I prefer fruit and nut woods as they tend to have a milder, almost sweet, aroma. Some excellent choices are almond wood, apple wood, pear wood, and pecan wood, if you can find them. Most people know about mesquite and hickory for smoking, but they are also hardwoods which make excellent fuel. If you happen to live on a vineyard, old grape vine cuttings make great wood for quick fires!

Build Your Fire Ahead

As I mentioned above, starting a hardwood fire can take some time to really get going. In addition, because you want to cook with embers as much as possible, you want to give your fire a chance to burn down as much as possible before you throw food on top. This can take quite a long time and depending on how much you are planning to cook and how big your fire pit or grill is, this can take literally several hours to build the fire, keep feeding it to build up a core of embers, and then let the large flames die down before starting to cook. Of note, while I generally prefer to do this type of wood fire cooking on an outdoor fire pit with a grill grate, most people don’t realize that you can burn a wood fire in most heavy duty charcoal grills as long as it is big enough. I have used the large Weber 22-1/2″ charcoal kettle grills to good effect as well as some Char-Broil charcoal grills.

Cook with Embers

As mentioned above, when cooking with real firewood, cooking over the hot embers is ideal. Why? A new fire, which has just been started does not give off much heat. Additionally, there are large flames coming up from the wood. If you lay a grill grate across this young fire, you will not get much radiant heat and instead will have big open flames lapping up around your food. This spells disaster for grill cooking! Your food will not cook on the inside very fast and the outside will catch fire and get burned to a crisp in no time!

To avoid this and to get the most of your firewood, take your time and start early. Red glowing embers give off tons of heat and don’t have big flames. If cooking in a fire pit or large grill, start your fire early and keep adding wood for a while to build up a deep core of hot, glowing red embers at the bottom. Then let the top wood burn down until you barely have any flames left, just a big, deep pile of red embers. These embers give off a lot of heat and because they don’t have large flames, they are less likely to char your food to a crisp. Only then should you lay your grill grate across and add your food. If you are cooking a lot and the heat starts to die down, stirring the embers with a poker helps to get more oxygen to the wood and will increase the heat for a while. If you really need more fuel, you can add firewood to the side and only push it over, under the cooking area, when it has burned down and no longer has large flames.

Rotisserie Cooking

One way to get a lot out of your wood fire cooking is to use a rotisserie. There are various rotisserie contraptions that can be purchased at grilling and camping supply stores. These are basically a large motorized or hand-turned spit that rotates over your fire pit. This is advantages for several reasons. First of all, for large roasts, such as whole poultry, pigs, and other large roasts, it gives you a very even, consistent cooking heat throughout the meat so that your food stays succulent and evenly done.

Also, for these larger roasts, laying them directly over hot embers can burn the surface long before the interior is even warm. Finally, the rotisserie can hold your food a considerable distance above your wood fire so that you can even cook over open flames without your food burning. If high enough, only the rising heat, not the actual flames, reaches your food, which is perfectly rotated in the aromatic smoke. Therefore, prep time is reduced as you don’t have to burn your wood down to embers first, although some embers help to supply adequate heat. For grilled leg of lamb and whole chicken and game birds, rotisserie cooking over a fire pit is one of my favorites!

Fireplace Cooking

In the winter it is often too cold outside to cook outdoors. However, many of us have a wonderful real wood cooking area right in our homes, although some of us don’t realize it. Most fireplaces are used exclusively for heat and ambiance these days, but years ago it was the primary cooking area in many houses. I love hearth cooking and it is not as difficult as most people think. For most types of fireplace cooking, special equipment is needed. There are fireplace cranes available which hold a handled Dutch oven pot or kettle over your fire to cook stews, soups or coffee. Fireplace grills are available which is basically a grill grate that sits over your firewood grate in the fireplace and allows you to grill any number of foods.

Even fireplace rotisseries are available which sit just in front of the fireplace and slowly turn your roast meats. But if you don’t want to invest in any extra equipment, there is always string-turned fireplace cooking. Traditionally a way to roast a leg of lamb in front of the fire, I have adapted string-turning to roast a number of different types of roasts, from whole poultry to tri-tip. All you need is a long piece of kitchen twine and a screw or hook installed in your mantle above your fireplace. The weight of the roast slowly spins it on the string so that you have a poor man’s rotisserie without a lot of extra equipment!

An Alternative

Finally, if all of the above seems like too much work and too much hassle there are easier alternatives to infuse wood smoke flavor into your food. Using smoking wood chips or chunks in either a barbecue or dedicated smoker grill is an option. Smoker cooking can really give you rich, aromatic smoke flavors in your foods. However, because you are using standard charcoal or gas as a fuel source, you avoid much of the hassle of cooking with real firewood.

I hope these tips help to get you started cooking with real firewood to bring your grill cooking to a new level of fun and flavor. Remember to always be safe when using fire of any type! Follow all basic fire safety rules so that only your food gets cooked!

Have Fun With Kids Bedroom Furniture

October 17th, 2011

Fun and kids bedroom furniture are two things that go hand in hand. The bedroom is a room that your children will need to be comfortable in. They also need to be able to have fun in them if they have to spend a prolonged period of time there. There are a number of ways that you can make your child’s bedroom fun.

Ideas for kids bedroom furniture

Kids bedroom furniture has changed over the years. Today you can get furniture that is made to be fun and exciting. Of course while you look at all the fun items you need to remember that they have to be functional as well. There is no point having a bed that is fun but cannot function properly as a bed. Getting furniture that has a good balance of fun and function is the best idea.

Some of the childrens furniture you can get

There are many different items of childrens furniture that you can get. One of these is bunk beds. This type of bed is both functional and fun. For generations children have had bunk beds and had fun with them. Mid-sleepers are another option that you can look at. These are ideal for single children who want to have a top bunk. Many of these items will come with either a study area or play area. The furniture does not online include items like beds, wardrobes and chests. Carpets and mats will also be included. It is possible to get fun mats and carpets for the bedroom. You can get a mat that has the image of your child’s favourite cartoon character.

Colours, shapes and materials of kids furniture

Some other aspects of kids furniture that can add to the fun are colour, shape and material. Having a range of different bright colours is best to add a little fun for your children. The shape of the furniture is also a way that fun can be added. Furniture that looks like normal furniture is not much fun for children. You can get chairs that look like animals, hands or different shapes. Using different materials can add something extra as well. The different materials can be shaped into different items making them fun an exciting for children.

How to arrange childrens furniture in a funny way

Just having the fun furniture is not really enough to make a room fun. The way it is placed and the other furnishings place a role in how much fun a child can have with the items. The best way to ensure that you children can have fun without hurting themselves is to have open space in the room. Enough space for running around the bed is the best place to start. If you have bunk beds then placing it in the middle of a wall is a good idea as there are three sides to play with. One thing to keep in mind is that sharp corners should be avoided at all costs.

Making your child’s bedroom fun is very important. There are many ways that this can be done including buying fun furniture. How you arrange the furniture will also add to how much fun your children can have.

Gourmet Cooking – Benefits And Joys

October 15th, 2011

Any great Chef, worthy of his reputation, will tell you that Gourmet cooking is an art form. To prepare a truly genuine gourmet meal you must be willing to cook from scratch using the best of everything that is required for your recipe and, of course, this will mean being very selective in your choice of meat, fish or produce. The choice of menu for a gourmet cook is in some way reliant upon what ingredients are at their best for that time of year. You need to be able to distinguish subtle flavours of herbs and spices in your dishes, as well as whatever else you have included in your creation. Your ingredients should complement each other, not one overpowering the other.

We take our enjoyment in gourmet food from many of our senses. Of course, the flavour and texture must be perfect, but your dish must be visibly appealing. Garnishing is an important element to gourmet cooking and will enhance the appearance of your dish. We also rely on our sense of smell to increase our pleasure in food and the inclusion of ingredients that have a wonderful bouquet all add to the experience All your dishes should be presented with care and creativity, and skillfully arranged.

Gourmet cooking is a subject that is limitless. New recipes or ingredients from other parts of the world are constantly being experimented with. Gourmet cooking is exciting and challenging but certainly not for the unadventurous or those who wish to stick to tried and tested philosophy.

Cat Litter Box Health

October 15th, 2011

Cats are the most popular pets in the United States. According to the latest version of the U.S. Pet Ownership & Demographics Sourcebook (2002 Edition) there were almost 70 Million pet cats in the United States. Why are cats so popular? There are as many answers to this question as there are cat owners, but the low health risks cats pose to their owners is certainly near the top of this list. Even though the potential health risks cats pose to people are small, it is important that cat owners are aware of these risks and understand how to reduce them.

The majority of all risks stemming from cat ownership are associated with the cat litter box and/or cat feces. There are two categories of risks. The first category contains health risks posed by bacteria and parasites to both cat owners and their cats. The second category contains injuries resulting from an automatic litter box or self cleaning litter box.

Primarily the health problems experienced by cat owners or their cats come from the first category and the most significant of these risks is called Toxoplasmosis. Toxoplasmosis is an infection caused by a tiny parasite called Toxoplasma gondii which can be found in raw or undercooked meat, unwashed fruits and vegetables, dirty cat litter boxes and outdoor soil where cat feces can be found. According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) more than 60 million people in the United States may be infected with the Toxoplasma parasite(1). Fortunately, very few people ever experience any symptoms because a healthy person’s immune system usually keeps the parasite from causing illness. However, pregnant women and individuals who have compromised immune systems, such as individuals infected with the HIV virus, are at risk and should take precautions to avoid being infected by the parasite. For people in this group a Toxoplasma infection could cause serious health problems to the individual or to a pregnant woman’s unborn child.

Again, most of the 60 million plus American’s infected with Toxoplasmosis parasite will never experience any symptoms. Most of those who do experience symptoms will simply think they have the Flu as the most common symptoms include swollen glands, fever, headache, muscle pain, or a stiff neck. For those in the high risk group, Toxoplasmosis can cause damage to the brain, eyes and internal organs. According to the US Food and Drug Administration, children born with Toxoplasma gondii can suffer from hearing loss, mental retardation, and blindness with some children developing brain or eye problems years after birth(2). The CDC estimates that 400-4000 fetuses are infected with the Toxoplasma gondii parasite each year and as many as 80 infants die from Toxoplasmosis annually(2).

So how does an individual contract Toxoplasmosis? A Toxoplasmosis infection is caused by ingesting the Toxoplasma gondi parasite. Most cat owners are infected with the parasite by accidentally ingesting infected cat feces. This happens when a person touches their mouth after handling a cat litter box, working in a garden or sand box or touching anything that has come in contact with cat feces(3).

People in the high risk group may wonder whether or not they should give up their cat to avoid infection. According to the CDC, it is not necessary for cat lovers to give up their cats, but it is important for them to protect themselves from infections. The USFDA makes the following recommendations for avoiding infections(2):

1) If possible, have someone else change the litter box. If you have to clean it, wear disposable gloves and wash your hands thoroughly with soap and warm water afterwards.

2) Change the litter box daily. The parasite doesn’t become infectious until one to five days after the feces are deposited in the litter box.

3) Wear gloves when gardening in a garden or handling sand from a sandbox because cats may have excreted feces in them. Be sure to wash your hands with soap and warm water afterwards.

4) Cover outdoor sandboxes to prevent cats from using them as litter boxes.

5) Feed your cat commercial dry or canned food. Never feed your cat raw meat because it can be a source of the Toxoplasmosis gondii parasite.

6) Keep indoor cats indoors. Be especially cautious if you bring outdoor cats indoors.

7) Avoid stray cats, especially kittens.

8) Don’t get a new cat while you’re pregnant.

Safer Child, Inc. makes the following additional recommendations(4):

1) Have your veterinarian test your cat for the Toxoplasmosis parasite. If you cat is infected, you may want to consider having someone else keep your cat during your pregnancy.

2) Keep sandboxes covered to prevent cats from using the sandbox as a litter box.

3) Be aware of neighborhood sandboxes as the parasite can be brought home on shoes, clothing and toys.

Similar to Toxoplasmosis, Escherichia coli (commonly called E. coli) can infect humans thru contact with feline fecal material, although the primary means of infection is thru ingestion or raw or undercooked meats. E. Coli is a bacterium commonly found in the intestinal tract of humans and animals. Almost all strains of the bacteria are harmless. However a few strains can produce powerful toxins and cause severe illness, especially in children under 5 years of age(5). Symptoms usually include diarrhea and abdominal cramps. In children under 5, 2%-7% of E. coli cases can cause kidney failure. Fortunately, E. coli is easy to prevent. Using the preventative measures, outlined above for Toxoplasmosis will greatly reduce the risks of you or your children contracting an E. coli infection.

In addition to these human risks, there are a few health risks cat litter boxes actually pose to cats that cat owners should be aware of. Just as a dirty litter box poses health risks to humans, cats are equally at risk if forced to use a dirty litter box. Since cats stay clean by licking themselves, allowing a cat’s litter box to get too dirty can cause infections when a cat cleans it’s paws after using the dirty litter box. The most common infection is a urinary tract infection, and although this type of infection is rarely fatal it can be very uncomfortable for your cat and will most likely require treatment by your veterinarian.

Finally, a lesser-known health risk to cats is actually caused by cat litter itself. What many cat owners do not realize is that some types of cat litter can be harmful or even fatal to their cat. Both clumping and non-clumping litters pose health problems to cats. Clumping cat litters are probably the most popular type of cat litter because of their convenience, hygienic qualities and the fact that clumping litters are required for use in self-cleaning litter boxes. Unfortunately, some clumping litters can be harmful to cats. Clay based clumping litters can contain the mineral sodium bentonite, which can be harmful or fatal to your cat. It is best to avoid using clay based cat litters, especially with kittens. Wheat or corn based clumping litters such as Swheat Scoop, World’s Best Cat Litter and Littermaid cat litter work very well and are non-toxic(6).

By their very nature, non-clumping litters do not absorb and isolate a cat’s urine or feces like clumping litters do. As a result, it is much harder to keep your cat’s litter box clean when using non-clumping litter. When using non-clumping litter it is important to frequently clean and disinfect the litter box itself to reduce the chance of bacterial buildups that can cause urinary or other infections in your cat.

The second category of health risks covers injuries caused by an automatic litter box or self cleaning litter box. Occurrences of this type of injury are rare, but they can happen. An automatic or self cleaning litter box does just what it’s name implies. Usually between 10-15 minutes after a cat uses the litter box, the litter box automatically cleans itself by “sweeping” or “raking” the cat waste into a sealed compartment or bag. For cat owners, injuries can occur if a small child or toddler plays with the automatic litter box during the cleaning cycle. All major brands of automatic litter boxes contain sensors to prevent the cleaning mechanism from activating when a cat or other foreign object is inside the box. However, children can still be injured if they put their hand inside the cleaning mechanism in such a manner as to avoid the sensors.

Although these types of injuries are very rare it is best to take precautions. Placing the litter box in a location where your cat can get to it but small children can’t is an easy method. This is good advice for any litter box as this is the best way to keep children from contracting one of the illnesses described earlier in this article. If you can’t keep the automatic litter box out of a child’s reach then it is best to put the litter box inside a litter box cover. There are many types of covers and all of them will help prevent a child from reaching the litter box and the cleaning mechanism. A final option is to unplug the litter box or put it into a “manual operation” mode. Both of these options will require the cat owner to start the cleaning cycle whenever necessary. Although this reduces some of the convenience of an automatic litter box it certainly removes the danger to children.

Automatic or self cleaning litter boxes are completely safe for almost all cats. However, most manufacturers recommend that the litter box be used in “manual operation” mode for cats under 5 lbs. Cats under 5 lbs many not be large enough to activate the sensors and the cleaning mechanism could cause injury. Since most adult cats weigh over 5 lbs, it is only necessary to use the “manual operation” mode until kittens grow to 5 lbs.

This article is not intended to dissuade anyone from owning a cat. 70 Million cat owners can’t be wrong; cats make great pets! So, if you already own a cat or are thinking of becoming a cat owner it simply makes good sense to be aware of the health risks associated with cat ownership. Understanding the risks can definately increase the enjoyment of cat ownership.

Choosing Furniture For Babies And Toddlers

October 13th, 2011

Today, the available selection of furniture for children is innovative and unique and goes far beyond the basic beds and dressers that have filled children’s rooms in the past. When you decorate your child’s room, consider his personality and his interests as you choose the best pieces. If possible, allow your child to help pick out the childrens furniture he will have in his room.

First, decide on a theme or color scheme for decorating. Beds and other furnishings for children can be found to match a number of designs. Some beds are even available as race cars, fire trucks, or princess castles. You may opt for a bed that fits the theme you’ve chosen or you can buy a simple bed and match the room’s design with a children’s bedding set in a similar theme or color.

To ensure a good night’s sleep for both you and your little one, choose a bed and bedding set that your child likes. Also make sure the bed is comfortable, sturdy, and appropriately sized. Small children who have just graduated from a crib or cot may feel safer in a small bed that is low to the floor. Optional bed rails are a good idea until your little one gets used to sleeping in her new room.

A dresser or small chest of drawers is typically a useful piece of children’s furniture for storing clothing and accessories. Look for a dresser that is sturdy and made of a quality material like wood. Drawers that sit low to the ground are best for young children who may try to climb on the furniture and a model that is not easy to tip over will be safer. Many dressers can be found in a matching set of furniture for your child’s bedroom, including the bed and often end tables.

Children usually have a large collection of books. Find a short bookcase in a colorful design to hold his treasured books, as well as other toys and figures. A desk or small table with chairs can provide a good, solid surface for your child to play and work on. Child-sized chairs and surfaces are great for art activities, homework, or playing with puzzles. Many tables and desks are designed around themes that may fit your child’s bedroom decor, like primary colored animals or soft, pastel flowers.

Every child’s bedroom needs plenty of sturdy storage for toys. Todays toy boxes are just as varied and unique as children’s beds. Deep, wooden toy bins are perfect for storing large toys, while toy boxes with multiple bins of various sizes are good for smaller toys. Some toy boxes offer shelved storage as well for toys like puzzles or to display a favorite collection of cars or horses. Find a toy box that will make it simple for your child to clean his room and to find a particular toy after it is put away.

Consider your child and his activity level when you purchase furniture. Children often climb, so kids furniture [http://www.monkeyshine.co.uk/index.asp?function=DISPLAYCAT&catid=64] that is low to the ground will minimize injuries. Many children can be rough on furniture as well. Look for quality built furniture designed specifically for children to stand up to a child’s wear and tear. Most importantly, decorate your child’s room with furniture he likes.

Fish Tank Supplies That Are Necessary To Keep Your Aquarium Running

October 13th, 2011

If you are just starting out with your first aquarium you may want to know what the essential fish tank supplies are are. This will include such necessities as water filters, air and water pumps, cleaning equipment, and lighting systems. The choice of fish tank supplies that you need will depend on the shape and size of your fish tank.

One of the first items on your list for fish tank supplies should be a fish tank stand. Fish tank stands are available in many materials with metal and wooden tending to be the most popular. When picking out a stand try to choose one that will blend in with the design of the rest of the room.

Fish tank hoods are equally as important, and should be at the top of your list of fish tank supplies. They are necessary to prevent the fish form jumping out of the tank and also to reduce the evaporation of the water. The highest quality hood tends to be those that are made of aluminium. They are fitted with a window for feeding the fish, have a condensation tray, a compartment for installing the lighting unit, and are light in weight.

A critical item on your list of fish tank supplies for medium and larger tanks should be a high quality water filter and pump. This will ensure an effective and efficient disposal of waste, water circulation and, recycling of the nutrients. Fortunately, many of the custom designed fish tanks will be come pre installed with pumps and filters so this is usually something the beginner need not worry about. A simple tap water filter can be used to deionise the water making it safe, and is a useful part of your fish water supplies

It may be a wise investment to select a water testing kit when you are picking out your fish tank supplies. This will enable you to determine the nitrite, PH and salt content in the water. If any problems are detected these can than be quickly corrected.

Lights will add different colours to you fish tank, and form another important part of fish tank supplies. They are available in three colours red, green or blue, and will add an attractive tint to the fish tank. Fluorescent and metal halide fish tank lights seem to be by far the most popular choice.

No list of fish tank supplies will ever be complete unless an assortment of corals, rocks, driftwood and maybe some battery powered toys are included. These accessories include battery powered wheels and divers. Ice shells, ice crystals and tiny fountains are also very popular fish tank supplies and will make your tank look more beautiful. When including any ornaments in your fish tank make sure that they are specifically labelled and intended for use in aquariums.

Do not forget to give your fish tank a green touch by installing some plant life. The plastic plants which are easy to install in your fish tank come in various designs, such as arrowhead, green and yellow spike, hair-grass and many more. They should definitely form a useful part or your fish tank supplies.

Cleaning the fish tank will be more problematic than it needs to be if you do not have the necessary fish tank supplies. Algae growth on the sides of the fish tank and collection of waste material can pose as a threat to the fragile ecosystem if not removed from the tank. Also, your fish tank will look much more attractive when it is not covered in dirt. Your fish tank supplies should therefore include an algae scrapper and also gravel cleaners, which will allow you to clean the tank and remove any dirt that sinks to the bottom of the tank.

It is important not to let the thought of cleaning the tank put you off buying your first fish tank as the pleasures of owning your own aquarium will greatly outweigh the limited amount of time needed for a cleaning routine. An ideal schedule to perform regular fish tank maintenance is every two to three weeks.

The great thing about fish tank supplies is that they are so easy to obtain with so many specialist online stores and local pet stores around, making it simple to set up an aquarium.

Are Maternity Clothes Necessary in Order to Look Good During Pregnancy?

October 13th, 2011

I remember my mother telling me about the times when she was pregnant. She was wearing nothing more than my father’s jeans and his working shirts throughout her pregnancy. No maternity clothes for her because she was too poor to buy them at that time. Remember, in her time, which was about 30 years back, maternity clothes used to cost a bomb.

And yet, if you walk along any shopping center these days, you’ll notice at least three or four maternity clothes fashion houses catering to the specifically ‘large’ needs of a pregnant mother. And since the web and the Internet is such a magnanimous thing these days, what about online maternity stores? I’d safely say there are just about half a million legitimate maternity stores right now flailing around the Internet wires for business.

And the amazing thing is that…YES, they make money! And why, I was wondering.

Because of one simple thing….even though my mother (like your mother) and my grandmother (and your grandmother) didn’t need maternity clothes when they were pregnant, the modern generation of pregnant women really, truly DO need maternity clothes. We’re living in an era that is completely different from their time and we cannot compare our pregnancy needs with their needs. The same rules no longer apply.

If you’re pregnant right now and am sitting around here wondering if you should get yourself a whole new wardrobe of maternity clothes, you’re in luck. I have some tips about buying maternity clothes for you.

Buy good-looking maternity clothes that can last at least 3 pregnancies

Like I said, maternity clothes are not cheap these days and maternity clothes are only wearable for the nine months that you’re pregnant and maybe another month or two after that. And when you get back in shape, you’re going to have to shelve those expensive maternity clothes or put the maternity clothes in sad boxes with the edges stuck together with cellophane tape.

So, buy only maternity clothes that are classy and of exceptional quality. You wear maternity clothes only when you plan to go out. For casual outings and at home, stick to your extra large clothes or perhaps, you can buy some large sweaters, t-shirts, overalls, or raglan to wear when you’re not required to look all-that-presentable. It works!

You won’t need CASUAL maternity clothes. In my books, that’s an oxymoron.

Maternity clothes that can double up as breastfeeding clothes later on would be good too

If you intend to breastfeed your baby after the whole pregnancy is over, you would have to think about buying MORE clothes…breastfeeding/nursing clothes. Now, as with maternity clothes, nursing clothes don’t come cheap either. And do we NEED nursing clothes as much as we need maternity clothes? Yes, sometimes we do. I have quite a few fashionable looking nursing clothes that I wear whenever I go out shopping or meeting up with friends. Other times, I wear my t-shirts with holes cut out for easy access to the breast! Yeah, it’s funny, but at home, who’s going to care?

And if you can get your hands on some good maternity clothes that can double up as nursing clothes later on, GO FOR IT! You will get your money’s worth that way.

Style of maternity clothes

Many maternity clothes designers are asleep when they’re designing maternity clothes – the selection is bad. Most of them are nothing but flower after flower, spiral after spiral, safety pins or perhaps some form of teddy bear or another. Forget about them! If you were to buy maternity clothes, invest one that makes you look good. If the maternity clothes are plain, that’s fine, it’s better than making you look like Bozo – most of them do, by the way.

The point is that you want to look CLASSY and DIGNIFIED even though you’re sort of….BIG. and wearing maternity clothes with large orange and yellow flower prints is NOT going to help you do that!

That’s just my opinion, of course, and you’re entitled to have your own opinion about maternity clothes that looks good.

Good luck!

October 12th, 2011

Online holiday shopping is more popular than ever. Online shoppers know that shopping on the internet for great holiday gifts is convenient, time-saving and safe. Not surprisingly, shopping for children’s furniture online has become the preferred method of selecting wonderful bedroom décor products. Parents can visit dozens of childrens’ bedroom showrooms and browse hundreds of wonderful kids room artwork all from the comfort of home. • User Friendly Site Organization including Lists by Price, Age or Theme - Choose to shop at a childrens’ furniture webstore that offers easy site navigation, a search function and special categories with products arranged by price, child’s age or theme.
  • Detailed Pictures & Product Descriptions - When purchasing childrens’ bedroom furniture by catalog or online, you are making your buying decision from photos and product descriptions. Make sure the webstore you choose to shop at has clear, detailed pictures of the items, including close-up and alternate views. It is also helpful if the webstore offers a picture of the items displayed in a complete bedroom ensemble so that you can visualize how the items might look in your child’s bedroom. Read the product descriptions carefully for aspects not readily visible in photos.

A great webstore will offer several ways of contact including by email, phone and a physical address. You should feel welcome and encouraged to call the company with questions concerning their products or policies. If you cannot easily reach someone to answer a question, beware before purchasing.
  • Press or Media Exposure - Companies spend time and resources to get their products into the media and press. This shows a commitment to their business and their products. Companies that have been featured in the media are chosen because they offer something unique or special. Press often require product samples or meet with company representatives prior to the feature, giving credibility to the webstore and products. Different Types of Snow Ski Wax You Should Know

October 9th, 2011

To have proper ski maintenance is one of the most importance things you should not forget if you love snow skiing. There is nothing better than skiing your way down every challenging slope on your newly-waxed skis.

Waxing has two purposes, first, it makes the ski glide better on the snow; second, it will help you to have stronger grip while you ski your way down on the snow.

While there are different weather conditions, types of snow and skiing style, these are the ones which determine the type of ski wax to use. Basically, there are three types of ski wax a skier has to know; the base, the grip and the glide ski waxes.

The Base Wax

Professional skiers would tell you to protect your new skis with base-conditioning wax. This type is usually used as a primer for the grip wax. It is also the most common ski wax used by amateur skier. Usually, base wax comes in a tin. When applied, it should be heated with an iron then rubbed into the base of the ski. An aerosol may also come with this wax which can be sprayed to your skis.

The Grip Wax

This is a sticky type of ski wax which is usually used in cross-country skiing. It is applied in the center of the ski so that when the skier presses down, it grips on the snow pretty well. There are two types of grip wax:

• Hard Kick – it also comes in a tin and is commonly used for newer snow. Mostly, it is rubbed directly into the skis until the wax becomes smooth film, but others use cork to rub it to the skis.

• Klisters – this one comes in a tube and is stickier than the kick and it is used on icy conditions.

The Glide Wax

Amateur skiers could easily understand the purpose of each type of ski wax that’s why most of them used just one type of wax. For those who are more advanced, they also use just one type of glide wax–the general-purpose glide wax. However, experienced skiers use the color coding for this type of wax to attain optimum performance on the snow.

• Red – it is commonly used during slushy conditions.

• Blue – this is for hard-crusted and dry snow.

• Violet – it works best on a mushy snow.

• Green – best used on a powdery, cold and dry snow which most of the skiers dream of.

Although it is advised to glide wax frequently, you don’t have to do it every time you ski.

Whatever type or style of skiing you want to perform on the snow, proper preparation of your skis is a very important requirement which includes waxing; this is not only done for better performance but also your own safety.

How to Self-Rescue While Snow Skiing in Deep Powder

October 9th, 2011

I wanted to cover safety in deep snow today because skiers die unnecessarily every year from not being able to self-rescue in deep snow.

Today I skied Mammoth Mountain Ski Area just after they got 10.5 – 15.5 feet of new snow. I skied today because it is supposed to snow this afternoon and tomorrow. I skied about 6 runs this morning in mostly knee-deep, pretty heavy snow. And just when I thought my balance was perfect, I was 10? tall and bullet-proof, I did something weird and fell in the bottomless powder in the trees. I got snow in my mouth when I fell, and that always gives me a short-of-breath/claustrophobic feeling.

I fell softly with my skis to my left, and my body fell to the right. Suddenly, I knew it would be really difficult to get up and out of this bottomless powder. So I took a moment, took a few deep breaths, and accessed my situation. I was somewhere in the trees that someone was unlikely to find me.

I needed to self-rescue. I knew from experience that I was in bottomless powder, and my poles would be of little help. Some say to make a “t” with your poles and lean on them, but no way would that have worked. The powder was too deep, and deep powder provides unique, potentially life endangering challenges. So we need to be prepared. Larger baskets on your poles are helpful for pushing yourself on powder days, but do not provide enough resistance to aid you in standing up from a fall. Since my body is heavier than by boots and skis, the more I struggle and move, the lower my body will sink putting my feet be above my head.

In this case I was able to slowly over a period of about 2 minutes shift my butt to be more over my skis by pulling my body mass over the skis by pulling on my legs below the knees. The last part was hard because I had nothing to brace against, but I knew if I could make this one last move to get my butt over the backs of my skis, I could stand up. So I pulled on my legs one more time because I knew that would give me the resistance I needed.

I managed to stand up, now about 5 minutes after I fell. Both my skis were on, and sunk deep in the snow. I slowly pulled the right one up breaking the surface of the snow to get higher footing. Then I did the same with the left ski. OK, I was finally able to glide back out onto the groomed part of the run, and complete the self-rescue from bottomless powder.

In another blog post, I have detailed how to find a ski in bottomless powder which can be challenging. Search in the search window of this blog for “Lost ski” or “finding lost ski”, and it should come up. My method has always been able to find the lost ski quickly, so you no longer need to worry about that.

But I still want to cover what happened to me at June Mt. as a kid. It was a week with 8 feet of new snow at June Mt. I skied the face successfully, but fell and made a huge hole in the flat part at the bottom. At first I kind of panicked, and struggled to get to my feet. But the more I struggled, the more I sank down in the powder making the hole deeper. It got to the point where I was 8 feet down in this hole, and still could not get to my feet.

I knew no one was skiing the face that day. If a ski patroller skied by he would not hear my cries or see me unless he saw the track to my hole. I couldn’t count on that!

I was only about 11 years old, and I needed to get resourceful to self-rescue, or I could be there all night and freeze. I decided to take a break. I took out the camera I had in my pocket, and took a photo from the bottom of my 8 foot deep hole. I tried to push my poles to hit something solid, and I sank them all the way to my shoulder. I hit nothing that could support me.

I thought some more and finally I figured that I could take 1 ski off, and use it horizontally to be a form of support. I was able to take 1 ski off and holding the side of the ski and digging it in for grip, pull myself to a standing position this way. Then I pulled my upper body up, and stepped up sideways up the side of the hole. I kept doing this until I got to where I was only knee deep again.

I put the ski back on, and was able to break trail back to the chairlift. Please remember this technique if you get stuck in a hole in deep powder. This same self-rescue strategy could work to extricate yourself from a tree well, which can be fatal if you do not know what to do. More information about what to do if you get stuck in a tree well is located at: http://www.treewelldeepsnowsafety.com. There are some really good safety tips at that site that I have not covered here.

I can tell you from experience it is easier to learn these proven self-rescue techniques from some one else than to have to make up a rescue technique when you get stuck. People die from getting stuck in deep powder. I gave you 2 self-rescue techniques here. I also recommend you always carry a whistle when you ski the trees. It might give you the capability to summon help where you can not be seen. I also recommend you carry a fully charged cell phone with Mammoth Mountain’s ski patrol phone number programmed into your phone. This way, when you get injured, you can call for help and tell them where you are. You should program under ICE for In Case of Emergency, your person to be contacted in case of injury or emergency. Emergency personnel know to look in your cell phone for this, so you need to program your emergency contact phone number in there so they can find it if they need to.

Other emergency stuff I carry because I ski the trees are:

1) Small knife – Can cut you down from a tree, or filet a fish or squirrel if you have to.

2) I told you about the whistle – Can help ski patrol hear you when they are making their last sweep of the mountain at closing.

3) Lighter – If you had to spend the night, making a fire could save you from freezing to death.

4) Your cell phone programmed as recommended above.

5) Cliff Bar – These have a lower freezing point so you won’t have to chew on a rock-solid snack bar.

6) Fleece balaclava – Can really increase heat retention in winds, and if you get stuck overnight.

7) Ski helmet – Wear a helmet every time you ski. You cannot predict when a dangerous situation will present itself. 80% of fatal ski injuries could have been prevented by simply wearing a helmet.

I photocopy my driver’s license and medical card so if I am knocked unconscious they know who I am from my driver’s license. And they know my “ICE” In Case of Emergency person to call because it is programmed into my cell phone I have on me all day.

Being prepared and informed can save your life or keep you from being stranded in the woods for hours or overnight. If you just ski the groomed runs, you only need about 1/2 this stuff. But I like to duck into my tree powder stashes, so I keep this packed in my ski jacket at all time so I will have it if I ever need it. Please teach these deep snow self-rescue techniques to your family, friends and loved ones so they will know what to do in this potentially life-threatening situation. Be Safe On the Slopes!

First Rule When Starting an Online Business – Create a Business Plan

October 6th, 2011

o Which direction is your business heading?

o Can you tell others where your business is heading?

o Do you have a sense of commitment, as you tell others your business objectives?

o Do you have a sense of achievement, as you see your business progressing in the way you had envisaged?

You know you have never created a business plan, and now you are wondering where you should start. You have a blank piece of paper or a new page open on your computer and writing the opening sentences will always be the hardest. What do you do next?

You know you can make the plan as complicated as you want, but there are really four elements that all business plans need to cover.

When you write the plan using these four elements you will be able to extend them naturally.

o Why do you have a business?

o What direction do you see your business going?

o How are you going to achieve your goals?

o How much will it cost to reach your goals?

How do you write your plan now? Well, the secret is to keep it short and sweet. If you can’t sum up in a sentence or two what the purpose of your business, then you’ll need to go away and consider what your business is about. You’ll need to keep working at it until you reach the stage where you know exactly what your business is about.

Imagine this situation, when you are trying to explain what you do to friends and family. It is worth sitting someone down and trying to explain to them your business.

The problem is they become bored or worse think you are a scammer, because you are still trying to explain it and it is making no sense to them. It’s time to stop and think again about what you are doing. The solution will be to keep fine tuning what you are saying, until you reach the stage where they understand what you are doing online. That doesn’t mean they won’t think you are mad, but at least they understand the principles involved in what you are trying to do.

Do you know, what a lot of people say their goals are with trying to have a presence online? It is to make money. Now the bad news is that all businesses want to make money, but that is not a good reason to have a business. If your goal is only to make money, then you should take a job. Many jobs will pay you more than you are earning online, especially if you are just starting out.

You see, there has to be another motivation for you to run your own business.

o You might want to be your own boss.

o You want to work at home to be around the family.

o You might want to be able to do some charity work.

Whatever, your goals you need to know what that is, to be motivated when you go through the difficult time. These times will come when you run your own business.

What direction do you see your business going?

Yikes, this is the six million dollar question, because at the moment, you are barely making any money online. If only you knew where your business was heading then you could answer the question.

The simple solution is to start to put more information into your business plan.

You need to know that the secret is to write your business plan the SMART way.

o Specific

o Measurable

o Actionable

o Realistic

o Timed

All good businesses have a solid foundation. You’ll need to have a good foundation for your business plan. Without it, your whole business will tumble and fall.

So your plan is to stop working in a job. Not good enough, you need a specific plan which would say you want to quit that job in 1 year’s time. You need to have something to aim for, in other words a GOAL.

Your plan is to earn money online. Yet, the specific plan says, you want to earn $100 per day and you will reach that goal within 3 months.

Measurable

You’re going to make money but you have no idea when you will reach your goal, because you don’t know what your goal is. The answer will be to have a time scale to reach your goals.

But, you say, you might not reach your goal within that time, what do you do then? Simple solution to this, you move your time scale or your goal. The one thing you don’t do is QUIT.

You set a goal to earn $100 a day in 3 months. 3 months is now over, and you only earned $90 a day. Is that bad? No, it is $90 a day more than if you had never tried. Now aim for that extra $10 a day.

Actionable

You are going to take action now to see your goals fulfilled. Regardless, of the goals, you need to have a plan and then you need to follow that plan through with action.

The bad news is that a lot of people fail online. They tried this product, and that system. Today they try one idea, and tomorrow they move onto the next idea. Everything they do is a failure.

You see there is a moral to this story, and that is unless you have a plan, and you take action then you will fail.

Now read that again.

Unless you have a plan, and you take action then you will fail.

Each person will have different goals, and you should keep updating your goals and carry on taking action.

Realistic

I have some news for you, and that is you are not going to be a millionaire overnight, unless you have a relative who leaves you a fortune.

But, you say, my bills need paying at the end of the week, and I heard that you can earn money overnight, in your sleep online.

The secret here is to be realistic in your goals.

Being realistic is not for a lot of people. Are you someone who has never earned any money online? How long have you been trying to earn and being failing? Do you know the big secret that we are keeping from you? It is this; you will not make a fortune overnight. If you don’t set realistic goals, then you will quit and be a failure. Being realistic is important and you need to start right now. Yes, this is the time to be real, and see what you need to do to earn that money.

Timed

You know, this is going to be excellent training for you, because you need to set your goals with a time for seeing those goals achieved.

But, there is more to it than that. Time management is essential for any business. If you are providing a service you need to know how long a job is going to take. You see, if I ask you to write me some articles, and you think I can do that in a couple of hours, you will charge me for a couple of hours work. Now, listen carefully, because the problem is this, you had to take twice as long to research and then write them, than you first thought. That means you worked twice as long for the same amount of money.

The answer is to learn to manage your time, and be able to estimate how long a job is going to take.

If you are going to be serious about your business, then knowing how long every job is going to take will be important.

There is an added bonus here, and that is once you know how long it takes to do a job, you will know how long you have to surf the web, and visit your favorite websites.

Need some help with questions, try these.

o How much turnover and net profit do you want to achieve and by what date?

o You want to be the top of your niche by what date? How would you like to see that achieved? This needs to be included in both the long term and short term plan.

o You need to increase your products and services to what? When is that going to happen? Creating your own products then be realistic, it might not be possible (unless you outsource) to write 100 ebooks each month.

o Increase in traffic to your website is something we all want. How much extra traffic do you want to see and what date would you like to achieve that by? Do you need to change you marketing to get this extra traffic?

Now, you want to have a business which is selling to other Internet Marketers, and this is the problem you are new and nobody knows you. Guess what, the way around this is to do some research. It is a simple solution, but if you can do this, you will learn lots of secrets that you thought were hidden.

o What motivates them to buy?

o What are the trends in Internet Marketing?

o Who are your competitors?

o Why would these people buy from you?

o What are you offering that is different from the rest?

You see, you need to ask many questions as you research and then you should analyze all the research material you have. You see, there is no point in spending valuable hours researching if you are not in a position to use that information.

SWOT

Strengths

Weaknesses

Opportunity

Threats

You see, you as you analysis your research you need to consider three questions.

Who is my market?

Why will they buy from me?

How will I provide the products for them?

One problem you face when you start a new business is being in direct competition with other established businesses. You will be trying to sell your product alongside well known Guru’s. Your name isn’t going to be well known and people will want to know they can trust you.

All around you people will be asking questions even if they are only in their mind.

o Is it a new or unique product?

o Is the price cheaper than other people’s products?

o What is the guarantee with the product?

o Is it a better quality product?

Summary of Your Business Plan

By now your business plan should be focused on two periods of time. You have the present time and the future which should be between one or two years only.

You have included some good information into the plan.

o What type of business you have, and include both the products and services you have available.

o Include information about your business, how many employees, turnover, profit margins and location of any offices you have.

o What is the growth and expansion of your business?

o What niche do you market?

o Have you identified your competitors?

o Do you know how long it will be before your plan will become a reality?

Three Stages to Preparing Your Plan

Do you realize there are only three simple stages to be used when you prepare your business plan?

o Research

o Draft the Plan

o Action

Research

You see, you will need to do thorough research. This isn’t only true when you start your business but you should do research at different stages during your time in business.

Why is this important? It is only important if you want to stay at the top.

“But it is time consuming,” you say. Well, it can be, and you might need to take a couple of days away from the business to do this. If you are running your business single-handed then schedule the time into your day to day routine. It might take time, but think about the benefits to you and your business.

Now, yes right now, take a good look at where your business is today; be honest with yourself because if you are not making any money then you will need to know why that is happening.

You see, there is no benefit for you to inflate your earnings to what you want them to be, because only you are seeing them at the moment. If you want to reach your goals then you need to know where you have been; where you are; and where you are going.

Now if your business is selling digital products, then evaluate which ones sell well and which ones are not making you any or very little profit. If you look at each product carefully, you might find that a certain niche isn’t selling well. Dig as deep as you need to go to find out where your business is at.

You see now you are making progress, you now know where you want your business to be, in the next quarter, or year. You know you need to give yourself a time scale.

Ah! But what if you discover the business is doing badly, you might want to have the challenge of turning it around quickly. The solution will be not to set the deadline too far in advance. If you do, then you might fail to take any action until the last minute.

Look at every area of your business, and see if it is producing the best results possible. Is there a new niche you want to add to your business?

And finally, you’ll need to find a way to get from where you are today to where you want to be in that allotted time period. It might mean dropping some products; updating others or even find new products to market. You’ll need to know exactly and clearly what you need to do and how you will achieve those goals.

You see, this is what a business plan is all about; it will give you the map for your business to follow.

Just imagine you’re taking a car journey and you’re going to somewhere new. Nobody in the car knows the way either. You see most motorists would look on a map or use their computer to get the route needed to be taken. But, you are not like most people, because you don’t want to be told what to do. You know you can find your own way there without any help from anyone else.

Well, you might but it is likely you will get lost many times, and you might never reach your destination. However, if you do reach your destination you will find you have spent many more hours on the road than you needed to get to the destination.

Listen carefully here, only if you are stubborn will you say you don’t need a business plan. You know you can make that decision because it is your business that will be affected, and you will get lost time and time again. You’ll be the one who is trying to get to a goal and not reaching it. You’ll be the one who won’t make any money and be able to run your own business. You’ll even get added to the statistics of businesses that fail.

We all like to know secrets, well here is another one for you, if you don’t want to be a failure with your business, then you will start to plan today what you business is going to be like in twelve months time. Not only that but you will have your route map and you will follow it until you see the goals achieved.

You see all the time you need to consider where you are going because without a destination, you will keep going around and around in circles.

You’ll need to consider how you are going to sell your product before you spend hours creating it, and then you need to decide how to deliver that product.

Draft the Plan

Let me tell you there is no format for writing your plan. You should find your bank or financial institute have ones available for people starting out in business. But, you’ll need to find what works for you and your business.

You see, as you start to write the plan you’ll realize what needs to be added which is exclusive to your business and strategy. Remember, it doesn’t have to be perfect. Always, give yourself room to expand the plan as you find out more information from your research.

Listen, you might start to do a basic financial statement and realize that you have to change your opinions about certain areas of the business, based on what you are now seeing. That is a good way to progress your plan.

Keep in mind these points.

o Where your business is today?

o Who works for your business?

o What are the turnover and the profit?

o How does you business compare to your competitors?

o What is your profile like?

o Where will your business be by a given date?

o What is the vision of the company?

o How many people do you need to fulfill the vision?

o What turnover and profit do you need to achieve?

o How can you improve your business to overtake your competitors?

o What do you want your profile to be like?

o How you are going to get there?

o If you need staff, do you have any idea whom will you hire?

o How can you increase both your turnover and profit?

o How can you change your marketing and image?

o How can you increase your profile?

You see, keeping the plan simple is all that is needed. You can use these bullet points and add in any other information as necessary.

Now, you might think the more complicated the plan the better it is, but that isn’t true. The more complicated the plan the less likely you’ll implement it.

Action

You see, there is no point in spending time analyzing and researching your business if it ends there. Too many will do the groundwork and then quit. You know what will happen then, these businesses will fail. The best business plans are from those people who take action.

Here is the real secret of any successful business, whether that is online or offline, you need to take action.

You know, there is nothing worse than talking with a person who has a problem, who doesn’t want to take any action. How many times have you seen a person ask a question on a forum, only to come a week later asking the same question? At some stage, another person will ask did you read and act on the advice given.

Now if you are dealing with a person on a one to one basis, and they ask for your advice and come back time and time again with the same problem, what do you do? You ask if they put into practice what you suggested. They then say, “No!”

You are frustrated because you are unable to help them. But until they are prepared to do anything to get out of the situation, they will remain in exactly the same state that they are in. Until the person puts into practice what they have learnt they will never, ever leave that situation behind.

Now you know that this is true with some people who want a business. They want the financial benefits without having to do any work, and because they don’t want to work, they won’t take any action.

As your business expands, you’ll need to have a good idea who is going to do each task, or know what type of person you are looking to employ. You might need to find a good writer for articles and ebooks. You could have a target of a certain number of articles which need to be written each week. You’ll need to set the tasks, the deadlines, and the person to do the job.

Now this is important, as you build your business, you will come across people of excellence and you’ll want to hire, employ or outsource to them.

You should keep a record of their details, name; email; phone and any other details you might have. When you need to have a job done you already know which people you’ll want to work with.

And finally, you should keep you plan handy and use it on a regular basis. Let it influence everything in your business especially as you expand.

Can you see you business rapidly expanding, do you really want to have to spend time writing a business plan or trying to work out how the business should run?

Now, if you have the plan written, then it is simply putting it into action. If you need to expand, then add to your existing plan.

Always, remember to review your plan on a regular basis. Don’t wait until a crisis comes to try and work out what you should do. Be prepared before the crisis happens. You business plan will keep you on track to remain in the group of people whose business survive.

Election Year Politics and Office Talk – Protocols For Workplace

October 5th, 2011

Most are familiar with the old adage cautioning against discussing religion or politics in polite company, but a recent survey indicates that many are not heeding this advice when it comes to talking politics at the office.

According to a 2007 survey by Vault, 66% of respondents say that their co-workers discuss politics at work, while 46% have witnessed a political argument at the office.

With election season in full swing, impassioned political debate has the potential to escalate into conflict of a deeply personal nature, some of which may create bad will among co-workers that can far outlast the current issues of the day.

While a certain amount of political discussion at work is unavoidable, it’s not surprising that such talk often leads to heated and emotional argument. Political viewpoints often serve as umbrellas that cover a spectrum of deeply held personal beliefs that are informed by an individual’s religion, culture, upbringing, economic class and other influences.

Appropriateness: When and how much?

Best practice dictates that employees avoid political discussion of any form during the regular conduct of business. Interjecting political commentary into meetings, work-related email and/or other official communication is highly unprofessional and grossly inappropriate. Doing so drags down productivity, creates unnecessary distraction, and can potentially alienate fellow employees and/or clients.

While the line is clear in the conduct of official business, it’s not as clear when socializing with co-workers while on the job. The following are a few guidelines to help you steer clear of any unintended harmful side-effects that may come about when expressing your political views.

Be mindful of those around you:

While a boisterous political discussion may seem to you to be the perfect way to spend your lunch break, others may not share your enthusiasm for politics. Never take an individual’s silence as agreement. It is equally likely to signal discomfort.

Before launching into a political discussion, ask all within earshot two questions:

1. Are you comfortable having a political discussion with me?

2. Do you mind overhearing me talk about politics?

If the answer to either of these questions is no, then it is not appropriate to continue.

Remember that others may feel as strongly as you:

While it can be frustrating when someone refuses to be swayed by your

seemingly reasonable arguments, it’s important to remember that others have deeply and honestly held convictions as well. Bullying and/or pestering others until they come around to your viewpoint is inappropriate behavior and will likely create conflict, workplace disruption, and hard feelings.

Avoiding escalation always begins with the respecting the rights of others to believe differently than you. When in doubt, it’s best to “agree to disagree” and drop the issue.

Never make it personal:

People of good faith can disagree on all manner of things. A particular political viewpoint is nothing more than a set of ideas and has no bearing on an individual’s integrity or intelligence.

Never allow political disagreement to become personal. Always take care to avoid inflammatory language, personal insults, and sweeping generalizations.

Allow your sensibilities to be guided by basic courtesy. A good rule of thumb is to follow the same conversational etiquette that you would follow if you were a dinner guest in your co-worker’s home.

Handling Harassment

No employee should feel compelled to agree with or remain silent in the face of aggressive political advocacy. Attempts to embarrass, ostracize, harass or punish employees for their political ideologies can create a hostile work environment.

If you are uncomfortable with the discussion of politics at your workplace, it’s recommended that you make your feelings known and politely assert your wish to avoid political discussion at the office. If met with resistance or retaliation, report your discomfort to a supervisor or a Human Resource representative.

Automotive Advertising Agencies Must Lead, Follow, Or Get Out of the Way

October 5th, 2011

I am a self described old school car guy but perhaps my definition of that well earned title has a different meaning than many of my contemporaries have assigned to it. My definition of a car guy is an entrepreneurial business man that is driven to win, who values relationships as a team builder and who prides themselves as being a community leader. The people skills needed to accomplish most goals in the car business are built on an understanding of human nature which has survived in the virtual world of today’s Internet Super Highway. However, the technologies and online processes needed to communicate to customers have changed dramatically and us car guys need to stay ahead of the curve to stay competitive.

Similarly, automotive advertising agencies serve the retail auto industry in much the same way that they have for decades. However, since the one constant in the auto industry is change — and human nature is also a constant — then change in the automotive advertising industry must be limited to the technologies that have developed to serve the newest media of choice; the Internet. Agencies are still striving to improve the reach, frequency, cost per impression and the basic R.O.I. of their automotive advertising campaigns delivered to a qualified and targeted audience, however in my considered opinion there has been a paradigm shift in automotive advertising as a result of the empowerment that the Internet has extended to the online car shopper.

Conventional wisdom supports the position that selling processes on the virtual showrooms being built on the Internet Super Highway must replicate and integrate with those used in the brick and mortar showrooms on local car rows, however that is reflective of the needs of the auto dealers, not the customers. Structured selling systems require repetitive processes that eliminate redundancy of data input and accommodate follow up and management monitoring which has little value to consumers who just want to know if the auto dealer has the vehicle that they want and how much will they have to pay for it.

Old school wisdom suggest that the goal for the dealer after an initial contact by phone, email or by an online visitor to their website is to make an appointment to get the customer into the showroom since, after all, you can’t sell them a car on the phone or on the Internet — or can you? New technology based solutions like AutoTransaXion introduced by Argistics provide an online transaction tool with a two way video customer interaction application that links to the auto dealer’s DMS, CRM and ILM in a comprehensive push/pull manner that replicates the real world selling process. The enhanced transparency and relevancy provided by this online communication tool satisfies the needs of the online car shopper while providing a seamless transition that allows the auto dealer and the consumer to complete an online transaction.

Most Automotive advertising agencies recognize the need to provide transparency and relevancy to attract online car shoppers but few are aware of solutions such as AutoTransaXion to convert these new opportunities on the World Wide Web to sales. Budget challenged auto dealers are demanding that their automotive advertising agencies deliver more for less and staying in touch with new technology is one way to deliver.

Another opportunity to leverage online resources for automotive advertising agencies in the know can be found in new online inventory based marketing platforms like ronsmap.com that utilizes its game changing technology to integrate social networking media with their platform. The extended reach and frequency of message provided by their vBack Ask-a-Friend / Tell-a-Friend application increases S.E.O. for the auto dealer by integrating their social networking engine with every vehicle posted on ronsmap, the auto dealers’ website and third party sites that the auto dealer posts their inventory on. As a result, leads and sales are increased exponentially as they tie into the viral messages powered by their C2C marketing methods vs. more commonly utilized B2C methods offered by banner ads and other attempts to market into social networking communities from the outside in vs. the ability for vBack to market from the inside out.

In addition, the Intelli-Leads gathered by ronsmap and their vBack application are enhanced by the market intelligence gathered by their SellersVantage application which provides real time information on the online consumer beyond the typical name, IP address, contact information and questions regarding the vehicle they selected. SellersVantage provides the auto dealer with the comparable vehicles that the customer may have considered through ronsmap as well competitive information on similar vehicles currently being offered on the Internet. As a result, conversion rates are increased for the auto dealer and the transparency and relevancy for the car shopper is enhanced. Of course none of this is possible if the automotive advertising agency doesn’t know about ronsmap and similar leveraged online marketing platforms to recommend to their auto dealer clients.

Understanding and applying the rules established by the search engines to maximize the S.E.O. for their auto dealer clients is another challenge for automotive advertising agencies that requires them to listen and learn about new Internet applications before they can presume to serve their clients’ needs. Social media has earned a weighted position on Google that is only matched by their similar respect for video to reflect consumer preferences. A generation of T.V. watchers has matured into video-centric consumers that prefer to watch an online video of a vehicle vs. a typical display ad listing features and benefits or even a set of pictures. SiSTeR Technologies has a video production platform, Video CarLot, that hosts applications like their vShock and VidBrid that produce professional quality videos from still pictures extrapolated from an auto dealer’s website using human voice, existing video footage and multi-schema layers with interactive information for the consumer to increase the transparency and relevancy of the experience.

In addition, SiSTeR is able to increase the vSEO of the dealer by distributing each produced video directly onto the search engines through their dedicated API with You Tube with their own URL, file name and associated search words and meta tags. Couple that with the linked micro-site offered by their vShock application that follows custom business rules established by the auto dealer to display the selected vehicle video with other similar vehicles chosen from their online inventory and you can see the added value of an automotive advertising agency that knows to suggest this video platform to their clients.

Other new vendor solutions offered by companies like CityTwist.Com who offers a do it yourself email platform with over one hundred and twenty five million double opt-in email addresses to facilitate conquest sales for auto dealers and Bull Dog Marketing Technologies who provides an internal data based marketing platform capable of delivering direct mail or email messages with personal URLs and custom vehicle selection and price quotes in monitored monthly campaigns for sales and service will also provide enough of an R.O.I. to support the fees that they paid to the automotive advertising agency that suggested them. Simply put, today’s automotive advertising agencies must lead, follow or get out of the way of those forward thinking agencies that accept their new areas of responsibility that include listening and learning about new Internet based technologies to recommend to their clients.

What Makes a Hiking Boot Great?

October 3rd, 2011

How to evaluate hiking boots and footwear for comfort, protection, and durability.

Choosing hiking boots and footwear is one of the most important decisions you as a hiker or camper will make. They’ll either make your trip memorable or miserable. To find what’s best for you, ask yourself “What type of hiking do I do?”

Day Hiking (Light-weight)- Do you usually go for short hikes for one to several hours during the week or weekend without a backpack? Then you’ll want to consider these. They’re lighter, flexible, and breathe better because they’re usually made of fabric and split-grain leather. They’re comfortable for day outings but you’ll become fatigued and your feet will begin to bother you if you try to hike with a pack or for an extended trip because they aren’t designed to support you like the hiking boots below.

Backpacking/Hiking (Mid-weight)- Stiffer mid-weight hiking boots provide more support and protection for shorter 2-3 day trips or even day hikes with or without a light to moderate load. If you hike for a few hours and want more support and/or up to three days on or off-trail on easy to moderate trails get a mid-weight leather backpacking boot.

Extended Backpacking (Mountaineering)- The best level of support, protection, and durability for heavier loads and longer trips, but they’re also usually heavier. Supports heavy loads of approximately 40+ pounds (could vary with hiking boot). If you hike for more than three days on or off-trail with a moderate to heavy pack on demanding terrain get an extended (heavy weight) backpacking boot. If you need to attach crampons for glaciers check to make sure the boots are compatible before you buy. For cold-weather hiking it’s critical to get waterproof insulated boots that breathe to keep you dry.

Full-grain leather and Nubuck suede take water repellant products well but keep in mind that they won’t waterproof a hiking boot NOT designed to be waterproof in the first place. The repellant will help shed water but if you’re walking through streams or deep puddles you’re going to get wet.

Waterproofing

You may or may not need waterproof hiking boots. Consider the environment you usually hike in and how long your trips are. If you do a lot of short desert hiking trips you probably don’t need waterproof boots. Actually in a dry environment they’ll only make it harder for your feet to breathe (more numerous or heavy layers mean less breathability). Nylon mesh fabric breathes better than leather, but remember you’re making tradeoffs for durability, support, and protection.
